Frequently Asked Questions

Will the treatment required by my chronic medical condition be covered under my new individual health insurance plan?

Your medical condition, also known as a “pre-existing” condition, might have been a bigger problem in the past, when insurers were allowed to impose long waiting periods, or even completely refuse to grant coverage for these conditions. However, under HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), insurers are now limited to maximum waiting periods of one year or less. This means that after the waiting period is over, your plan will automatically cover the medical costs associated with your pre-existing condition.

With regard to the specifics, you will want to be well-informed as to the types of treatments and services covered by your new plan.
