How much does COBRA insurance cost?

COBRA insurance is typically more expensive than "regular" employee coverage. That's because employers pay part or all of the premiums as employee benefits, while COBRA participants usually must pay the full premiums on their own. Bottom line, health insurance isn't cheap in the U.S.

Your employer might pay part or all of the first few COBRA insurance monthly payments for you, as part of your severance package or in compliance with your employment agreement. But eventually, you'll likely have to take over the full monthly payments, plus an administration fee of up to two percent.
