Frequently Asked Questions

What doesn't COBRA insurance cover?

COBRA coverage does not include life or disability insurance. But your ex-employer (or the insurance providers) might offer continuance options. If not, you might be covered for disability by your state for free, but state plans typically pay less than employer-group or individual plans. The same state offices that administer unemployment insurance benefits usually also administer state disability insurance benefits. The Social Security Administration also offers disability benefits. But Social Security disability benefits are limited, and it takes a year of disability to qualify in many cases. Be sure to read the fine print of other plans, before you decline continuance options.
