Frequently Asked Questions

What are COBRA qualifying events?

For employees,
  • Voluntary or involuntary employment termination for reasons other than gross misconduct
  • Reduction in work hours
Qualifying events for an employee's spouse to elect coverage include:
  • Covered employee becoming entitled to Medicare
  • Divorce or legal separation from the covered employee
  • Death of the covered employee
Qualifying events for dependent children are the same as for as a spouse, except children may elect their own coverage if they lose dependent status according to the plan.

Neither spouses nor children (beneficiaries) are required to elect coverage, if they're already covered under your COBRA insurance. The qualifying events for beneficiaries are special circumstances. But to be covered, your beneficiaries must notify the plan administrator within 60 days after one of the special circumstances occurs.
